SSD Instructional Professor Appointment, Reappointment, and Promotion Guidelines

This document is meant to help guide departments through the Instructional Professor reappointment and promotion process, both of which begin with a formal performance review. The timing of performance reviews for reappointment or promotion is determined by the Instructional Professors current appointment term and rank:

| Assistant Instructional Professor | One, two, or three-year terms. Renewable for a maximum of seven years. |
Reviewed for progression no later than in the 6th year. |
| Associate Instructional Professor | Four-year terms. No term limit. |
May be reviewed for promotion after first year in rank. |
| Instructional Professor | Five-year terms. No term limit. |

Annually during autumn quarter, the Director of Academic Appointments in SSD (Katie Kaftanich) and the Divisional Administrator in SSCD (Alex Bean) will notify departments of Instructional Professors who are up for reappointment or promotion review. The goals of the Instructional Professor’s performance review are to support excellence in teaching, to encourage continued professional growth, and to assess overall performance. The review should focus on the Instructional Professor’s command of the subject matter, effectiveness as a teacher, and performance in other assigned duties. The performance review must also evaluate the professional development activities undertaken by the Instructional Professor during his/her appointment. In addition to strengthening mastery of subject matter, an Instructional Professor’s annual professional development activities must focus on improving their effectiveness in the craft of teaching (for example, successfully planning course materials and applying teaching strategies to achieve learning objectives).
