Visa Application Process

International Visitors to the Social Sciences Division

Increasingly, the Social Sciences Division attracts Other Academic Appointees from around the world. To hold an academic appointment at the University, an international visitor must be on a visa sponsored by the University of Chicago (meaning, they may not enter the US in a “tourist” status).  The Office of International Affairs facilitates this process for all visitors once the academic appointment has been approved by the Provost’s Office, according to their standard timelines and practices.  Follow the links below for further information.

International Faculty Hires in the Social Sciences Division

The Provost’s Office manages the entire visa request process for all incoming faculty. If you have any questions or concerns, or when you learn that a prospective new faculty member may need a visa, please contact Katie Kaftanich, Manager of Academic Appointments in the Dean’s Office, to facilitate coordination between the Division and Office of the Provost.

*NOTE: it is no longer required that faculty postings/job ads be placed in print materials, even if the selected candidate is international. Online advertisements (so long as they are public and posted for at least 30 days) do suffice for visa purposes.
