Sophie is a third-year double majoring in LLSO and Econ at UChicago. She first started folding origami butterfly bookmarks in high school to give to people as gifts. Upon entering college, she randomly passed by a Harper classroom and saw “UCHICAGORIGAMI” written in large letters on the blackboard. That day, she stood outside the classroom door hesitating for many minutes, wanting to check out what was happening inside but lacking the courage to step inside (she didn’t end up walking through the door that day but emailed the former club president and showed up at the next week’s meeting!). Fast forward three years, Sophie has improved her origami skills (albeit only slightly) and has met some of the most amazing people within the UChicagOrigami community. She’d love for you to join us and step through the door of one of our meetings and events in the future as well!
The theme of her exhibit today is Greek Life. She’s never been interested in college greek life but she knows that there is some sort of “big-little” system within fraternities and sororities; hence, her models are folded from papers of big and little sizes. The various models are connected to greek mythology: lily (Hera), elephant (cyclops), owl (Athena), dog (Ares), dove (Aphrodite), and dolphin (Dionysus). She also folded a chameleon (just because the model looked cute and she loves the movie Tangled).
