Recognized Student Organizations

University of Chicago students are responsible for founding and running over 400 “Recognized Student Organizations” (RSOs) with the support of the Center for Leadership and Involvement. Some of these game and play-related organizations include:

Scav Hunt

There is perhaps no greater symbol of the University of Chicago community’s spirit of play than the annual Scav Hunt. To quote from the venerable RSO’s website:

“The purpose of the University of Chicago Scavenger Hunt… is actually a matter of some debate. A more extensive disquisition on our ontological orientation may be found in our Bylaws, but this much we know: every May, since 1987, the University of Chicago has hosted the largest and best scavenger hunt in the world. Spanning four days, the Hunt is an intense blend of bliss and chaos. The modern Hunt includes a list of items and events, Scav Olympics, and a blood drive benefiting the University of Chicago Medical Center, though the precise form and content evolves from year to year.”

See the “Preservation” Page of this website for more on a UChicago Library Special Collections exhibit celebrating Scav.

Athletics

The University of Chicago Department of Athletics and Recreation aims to enrich the life of the whole person. We are invested in competitive excellence as we challenge our student-athletes to develop into their best selves as athletes, teammates, students and ultimately, citizens of the world.

The Athletics program sponsors 20 intercollegiate sports, with more than 500 participants and 330 contests taking place each year. It is an NCAA Division III institution, with a ranking of 9th nationally among 443 institutions in the 2024-25 Learfield Directors’ Cup standings.

The University offers more than 75 intramural and sport clubs programs annually, and provides free fitness classes each quarter, which are available to undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, staff members and members of the greater community.

Through sport we are committed to teaching how to work collaboratively to reach performance goals, how to embrace diversity of thought and culture, how to persevere through failure with resiliency, how to compete with integrity.
