Year of Games

Games @ UChicago

Games and play are integral to life at the University of Chicago. Faculty, staff, and students in a range of campus divisions, departments, and academic fields focus on games and play in their research, teaching, and creative practice. University of Chicago students design games for course assignments, as large-scale projects in collaboration with faculty, and as an extra-curricular recreational or professional development activity—individually, in small teams, and as part of student-run organizations. Games and play are used as teaching and learning methods in courses on a variety of (non-game-related) subjects. Student and community groups hold regular play sessions and tournaments for a wide range of traditional and more recent games, and the campus has vibrant athletics programs. Campus libraries and centers engage in the preservation and archiving of games, game histories, and game cultures. Finally, specific spaces of play on campus—like the MADD Arts Labs at Crerar Library—are set aside and maintained to make games and play available for all community members.
