Bollywood Parts II and III

May 26 and 28, 2020

In these sessions we will continue our exploration of music in Hindi films by listening to and reading lyrics from films spanning the 1960’s to the 2010’s. These selected lyrics and their musical accompaniment reflect the diversity of musical and literary influences that have inspired and shaped film music over the past half century.

As you read and listen to the above lyrics (and watch their visualization as song and dance sequences in films) think about the following questions:

  • Do you notice any elements or influences from the earlier (precolonial) lyrical genres that we have studied in the course?
  • What do you notice about the vocabulary of the lyrics? Which registers and lexicons are they adapted from?
  • Do you notice any elements or influences from other musical and lyric genres (like ‘folk’ music, jazz, rock and roll, rhythm and blues, Arabian maqam, etcetera)?
  • What do you notice about the relationship between the lyrics and the song/dance sequences in the films? Do the visual aspects of the sequences expand, reinforce, diverge from, or otherwise change the meaning of the lyrics (and vice versa)?
