The Economy of EVE Online
For my final project, I am working on expanding the participant observation I did in the game EVE Online. I hope to go into more depth on my theme – how players impact the economy – and use more media as to give the viewer a better grasp of the game. As of now, I have used a lot of my own gameplay – clips of me playing and screenshots of different situations – along with outside information such as the game’s wiki, a newspaper article on the game, and a clip of a discord conversation from players of the game. I hope to possibly get a mainly audio source, hopefully from an interview, to add to the draft. As of right now, I have not played enough to meet someone and do a voice interview with them (I have only typed in chats). Additionally, because I am not in a player-run corporation, my connections are limited. I applied to one yesterday, so hopefully I am able to meet people through that. I am definitely wondering on others’ thoughts on whether or not my types of media should be more varied.
Here is a link to my project that should hopefully work. Please let me know if it does not work.

Link works! It looks like you’ve pulled a lot together and I appreciate how the way scrolling works, it feels like things are uncovered and/or pictures are moving. Very fun! Maybe with the focus on your own gameplay, this could be presented more as autoethnography and you could lean into your experience of the game and record more narrative like sound bites. Looking forward to seeing the final version!
This project sounds really interesting and I think that your low in-game level might actually be beneficial to your project. I really like the idea of understanding this game from the perspective of a new player and trying to figure out the way in which accessibility to markets, materials, and ships is informed by player level and experience. I think that it will also be interesting to look at the ways in which people treat you as a new player. In what ways does the difference in player level shape your interactions and relationships with players inside and outside of the game?
I really like your use of Shorthand! It seems to seamlessly incorporate videos, photos, and sounds with text. I think it will be interesting to see the kinds of understanding of economy you can demonstrate without being in a player-run corporation. Your inclusion of a lot of your own experiences is very valuable to show how one may come to understand the economy in EVE.
Wow I really like how you used shorthand for this project! I think it’s a perfect fit for your game and goals. I’ve never played EVE before but that opening video had my attention immediately. Your first couple of paragraphs were also great introductions because I also had the same train of thought: this is beautiful –> where am I?? Your interactive visuals also helped with the immersive exp, so overall the project’s dynamic functions really work for me. Can’t wait to see you build on this.
Jonah-You did such a nice job using Shorthand to display all the multi-modal elements of your project. I think it definitely rivals Adobe Spark in its interface. I also like how you combined not only your own research but outside sources in supporting the ethnographic focus of your project. I explored the world of Habbo during the third week of this class and found it interesting that users could obtain more in-game currency/ luxury items through paying for it in USD. I wonder if it would be also worthy to explore EVE online players’ relationship to their virtual ‘wealth’ vis-à-vis their ‘real’ wealth.
This sounds like a really interesting project and your website is beautiful. I think it is all looking really good! And I think it is totally fine that you have been using mostly your own gameplay, and is a really cool thing you could incorporate into your project and reflect on
