The Significance of Art Through the Lens of the Benin Ivory Mask – Draft
For my final project I will be expanding upon my interview with my dad to explore the role of history in creating value and meaning in art. When I originally conducted that interview, there was no real direction or goal, so it was quite broad. Therefore, I will be cutting quite a bit from it. To make up for that, I plan to conduct a more pointed interview with my dad, as well as introduce some scholars who have spoken about the intersection of history, art, and colonialism. I particularly want to touch on the way the relationship between history and art informs the formation of identity on the part of the people who have historical ties to the art. I will be attempting to explore this through the form of a blog post which incorporates video, pictures, and quotes from other articles on similar topics. I have not gotten too far into the blog post, but I have included subtitles which should give an idea of where I intend to go with the project. My draft can be found here. (pass: ochuk)

Link took me to a “coming soon” announcement, curious to see how you integrate the scholarly work with multimedia and your interview with you father.
Hi! I think I fixed the issue. Please let me know if you still do not have access.
I really love the way that you have incorporated the interview so far. The way that you mix the interview with history provides a really immersive experience for the reader. I’m really interested in this second interview that you’ll be conducting with your dad. In what way do you think that the first interview will affect the way the second turns out? Are there ways that this interview and the way that you and your dad interact will be changed by being part of a series?
I really like the idea you have for your project! I like that it sits at an intersection of history and present by looking at how historical ties to art can inform current identity. I think the way in which you are engaging with archival material is particularly interesting. I am wondering, though, if you intend to focus specifically on the Benin ivory mask or if you want to extend a bit more outward to other forms of art.
It’s really cool to see how you’ve developed this project over the course of the past few weeks! Your project lends itself well to using more historical/academic sources, so it’s really cool you’re doing that. Also I really appreciate all of the background because I really do not know much and it was really helpful.
The draft for the blog looks great! I really enjoyed hearing this interview in class and I’m excited to see where this goes. The historical context and video you included really added extra elements to your overall writing.
