This preamble outlines the holy trinity identity politics of photojournalism and documentary photography.

  1. The nature of the photography should move beyond being non-racist and be anti-racist. Beyond refusing to reinforce stereotypes, the aim of photojournalism and documentary photography should be to uplift and amplify the voices and experiences of BIPoC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color).
  2. The photography should accompany clear and defined opinions. Ambiguous opinions are not critical or radical; rather, they encourage ambivalence and reduction.
  3. Lived experiences especially pertaining to intersectionality are potent sources of knowledge. Rely on your interlocutors as they will be the most accurate and informative sources and partners for your research.
