I think that for many people, especially those who are not experienced in working with AI or do not know much about how models like ChatGPT work, they sometimes use it as a miraculous solution to everything. Outside of cheating, depending on GPT to learn could lead to misinformation if used by someone inexperienced, and the result could take extra time and work for educators or the user themself to realize and undo. What Roose suggests reminds me of a class I took last year, where we spent one class experimenting with GPT-3.5 to analyze a paper we had to read for class. Through this, I was able to understand that while ChatGPT was able to produce an essay on the paper, the actual content was at best not constructive, and at worst fully incorrect, which led me to make the decision to forgo using ChatGPT altogether and write my papers the normal way. Overall, for things like essays that require a lot of analysis, thought, and argument, I’m not as concerned about possible cheating as Roose may be, but for things like problem sets this may still be an issue. Nevertheless, AI could be a helpful tool or assistive device in educational settings, and banning it doesn’t contribute to anything. I feel that instead, it’s more important for students and educators to understand the limitations of generative AI and know how to both address and work around these issues.
