CFP 2022-23

The 20th and 21st Century Cultures Workshop is pleased to announce its call for papers for the 2022-2023 academic year. We invite work from UChicago graduate students and early-career scholars in the humanities and social sciences on cultural objects or questions centered in the 20th and 21st centuries. As in past years, the workshop will be a venue to discuss works-in-progress such as articles, dissertation or book chapters, conference presentations, and projects intended for audiences outside of academia.

Papers submitted in the past are generally up to 25 pages in length and have been diverse in terms of their objects’ media and contexts; to get an idea, see the schedule of past papers and events.

Proposals should include:

  • Name, position (PhD student/candidate, post-doc, etc), and department

  • Provisional title and type of project (dissertation proposal, chapter, article draft, etc)

  • Short abstract or description (200-300 words)

  • The quarter in which you would prefer to present

We circulate papers a week prior to each workshop, and our format includes an introductory response by an invited reader before opening up a general discussion. Our website will be updated with workshop times and location as we approach fall quarter.

Please email your proposals to Cassandra Lerer (crblerer@uchicago.edu) and Chris Gortmaker (cgortmaker@uchicago.edu) by September 23rd, 2022. Please be in touch with any questions or concerns via email as well.
