Jon e. grant

Jon e. grant

Director, ACID Research Program

Jon Grant, M.D., J.D., M.P.H., is a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Chicago and directs the ACID research lab for at the University of Chicago Medical Center in Chicago, IL. Dr. Grant completed an undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan, a master’s degree at the University of Chicago, a law degree from Cornell University, a medical degree from Brown University, and a masters degree in public health from Harvard University. Dr. Grant is a board-certified psychiatrist.

Dr. Grant has written over 400 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on the phenomenology and pharmacological management of substance use disorders and impulse control disorders, particularly pathological gambling, kleptomania, and grooming disorders. He is the author of “Stop Me Because I Can’t Stop Myself,” a book on impulse control disorders published by McGraw-Hill (2002) (co-authored with Dr. Suck Won Kim), and is the co-editor (along with Marc Potenza) of two books published by the American Psychiatric Association, “Pathological Gambling: A Clinical Guide to Treatment” (2004) and “A Textbook of Men’s Mental Health.” He also lead-authored a book on the treatment of impulse control disorders using evidence-based cognitive behavior therapy (with Brian Odlaug and Chris Donahue).  Dr. Grant’s research is funded by the National Institutes of Mental Health.

Research Coordinator

Sophie Boutouis is a Research Coordinator at the ACID Lab in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Chicago. She graduated summa cum laude from the University of Texas at Dallas with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. She has previously worked as a Research Assistant at the Filbey Lab at UT Dallas and participated in summer research programs at Ohio University and the Medical College of Wisconsin. She is excited about performing clinical research and is particularly interested in shared and differential mechanisms across various addictive, compulsive, and impulsive disorders.

Laurie Avila

Laurie Avila

Research Coordinator

Laurie Avila is a Research Coordinator at the ACID Lab in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Chicago. She graduated from Carleton College with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a minor in Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies. She previously worked as a Lab Manager for the Perception Lab at Carleton College and participated in summer research for the Alcohol Research Lab at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She is excited about joining the ACID lab and is particularly interested in exploring novel pharmacotherapies such as psychedelics for various addictive, impulsive and compulsive disorders.

Malvika Malhotra

Malvika Malhotra

Undergraduate Research Assistant

Malvika Malhotra is a Research Assistant at the ACID lab in the department of Psychiatry at the University of Chicago. She is a rising senior psychology major at Carleton College. She has background in the aetiology and onset of PTSD and intervention development. Malvika is excited to work in psychiatry at the lab, researching and developing treatments for various addictive, compulsive, and impulsive disorders.

Harrison James

Harrison James

Undergraduate Research Assistant

Harrison James is a Research Assistant at the ACID lab in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Chicago. He is a junior currently pursuing a B.A. in psychology from Carleton College. He is interested in the etiology of compulsive disorders as well as the development of novel treatments for various other mental health disorders.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

Marion Caffey is a Research Assistant at the ACID lab in the department of Psychiatry at the University of Chicago. She is a third year undergraduate student at the University of Chicago majoring in Psychology and minoring in Computer Science. Her future interests include Clinical Psychology with a possible focus in Adolescent Psychology.
