Call for Submissions

Common Forms is accepting submissions for online release. Common Forms is a peer-reviewed journal in which MAPH students and alumni may publish creative, critical, or hybrid work. The journal attends current conversations within and outside academia, and is committed to publishing work from diverse interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary points of view. The current issue is themed. Guidelines for issue III’s DIY theme can be found here

We are currently seeking rolling submissions. These might include:

  • Academic Papers (10 pages maximum, single-spaced)
  • Poetry (5 poems maximum)
  • Short Fiction
  • Nonfiction
  • Reviews (cinema and media/ fine art/ books)
  • Visual Art
  • Musical Compositions (15-minute maximum)
  • Short Films (15-minute maximum)

Format for submissions:

  1. Title of your piece.
  2. A 150-200 word abstract. If your submission is not a traditional academic paper, please summarize the intent of your work.
  3. A 2-3 sentence author bio
  4. A polished draft of your complete piece as a Microsoft Word document (if AV, please use MP4 format) sent to commonforms@lists.uchicago.edu
  5. *** If your piece is in a foreign language, please attach supplements that will make your work accessible to an English-speaking audience (ex. paragraph reflection, translation, subtitles, etc.)
