Claire Rich (’23)

Within her photographic practice, Claire Rich seeks to capture the indescribable tenderness and unique imperfection of analog. She seeks to capitalize upon the subtle imperfections in film quality and exposure to imbue her images with a lived-in quality and a real-ness. Taken while traveling in southern France, this short series of photographs is ideally situated to offer a multiplicity of viewpoints that bring the viewer to another place, space, and time. Nearly free of markers of contemporary life, these images are both of this time and another, of this place and another. As such, Rich’s photographic practice as a whole reflects her desire to blur the lines between modern conceptions of documentary travel photography and the specific allure of a time gone-by, captured through moments that find the beauty of the ordinary. Combining the ordinary with a fascination towards soft, natural light and rich texture, Rich’s photographic practice depicts romantic glimpses of traveling both as a solitary explorer and with loved ones.
