Bonne Santé Health Foods, located at 1512 E. 53rd Street, is a true Hyde Park retail pioneer with a history going back nearly 50 years. Owner Kristofer Braaten is the second generation of this family-owned business, started by his mother LaVonne, as Hyde Park Health Foods in 1971.
The store is currently open as an essential business in the community, and Braaten notes that many customers have been stopping in for their wide selection of supplements, including oregano oil, zinc, vitamin C, flaxseed oil, Irish moss, and silver – as well as aloe vera gel, sometimes used as an ingredient in home-made hand sanitizer.
Kris took over the family business in 1990, moving the store to its current location in 1999. Bonne Santé Health Foods is neighborhood landmark, with a local staff well educated in store’s extensive stock of snacks, groceries, prepared foods, teas, energy bars, homeopathic medicines, beauty products, and household cleaning supplies. Bonne Santé Health Foods is open Monday-Friday from 9:30 a.m. – 8 p.m., Saturday from 9:30 a.m. – 7 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.
