This advanced workshop is designed to enable students to complete longer works of creative non-fiction. It is open to students completing BA and MA thesis projects in non-fiction, as well as other students who have a substantial body of work underway. Students will work under conditions that emulate demands on professional writers. To optimize time for writing, outside reading will be limited, but the course requires close reading of peer work. Peer critiques and editing will be grounded in the practical, as we search for structures on the page that inspire effects in the reader. We will also explore the tension between literary techniques that label the genre “creative” and factual commitments that establish work as “non-fiction.” (2006)
