Research at the Marine Biological Laboratory

Research at the Marine Biological Laboratory

The University of Chicago is affiliated with The Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, and the lab often spends time there in the summer working on Clytia. It’s always an exciting and productive time.

There are many ways to get to the MBL – here are a few:

Whitman Center Fellowships

Principal Investigator Jocelyn Malamy is a Whitman Scientist at the Marine Biological Laboratory, which is an affiliate of the University of Chicago and a place that brings people together from around the world for research and educational opportunities. Post-docs and faculty can apply for research fellowships at MBL at https://www.mbl.edu/research/whitman-fellowships/.

UChicago College September Courses at MBL

Thanks to our members Jocelyn Malamy and Elizabeth Baldo, UChicago and MBL staff work together to offer four intensive undergraduate courses for UChicago students at MBL. Students engage in a small, interactive learning environment for three weeks before the start of the Autumn Quarter. Visit https://college.uchicago.edu/academics/mbl-september-courses for more information on this year’s courses and financial aid opportunities.

UChicago Spring Research Quarter

Jocelyn and Elizabeth Baldo are also involved in creating the new Spring Research Quarter at MBL! Third and fourth year students interested in biological research are invited to apply to learn about research as well as to conduct some themselves. Course information, financial aid, and overviews are included at https://college.uchicago.edu/academics/mbl-spring-research-quarter.

Jeff Metcalf Summer for Undergraduate Research Fellows (SURF)

First through fourth year undergraduate students have the opportunity to be exposed to the incredible work done at the Marine Biological Laboratory. It is a 10-week immersion in discovery research, meeting with MBL faculty, professional development opportunities, and much more. See the full overview and award details at https://www.mbl.edu/education/undergraduate-programs/jeff-metcalf-undergraduate-scholars/.

Research Opportunities and Funding for Undergraduates

Getting involved in research is the best thing that you can do to launch your career as a scientist, and to find out if research is the path for you. The Malamy Lab welcomes applications from undergraduates to work in the lab (although we are often full!). For more research opportunities for University of Chicago undergraduates and sources of funding, please visit the Biological Sciences Collegiate Division page (https://college.uchicago.edu/academics/bscd-undergraduate-research-opportunities) and The College Center for Research and Fellowships (https://ccrf.uchicago.edu/undergraduate-research/finding-research-opportunities).

If you are not a University of Chicago student, or if you want to explore even more opportunities, the National Science Foundation offers undergraduate experiences (https://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5517&org=NSF) and the Association of American Medical Colleges has a list of programs to look through as well (https://students-residents.aamc.org/choosing-medical-career/article/summer-undergraduate-research-programs/).
