About

OrthoACCESS 2024

OrthoACCESS 2024 is a 16-topic hybrid, flipped-classroom curriculum adapted for the current clinical learning enviroment. It will be hosted May-August 2024, and structured as follows:

  • During a given week, participants will learn a topic through direct faculty education or by watching webinar recordings on our website.
  • The following Tuesday, we will hold a virtual case discussion
  • Learning resources (including Anki cards, scut sheets, etc.) will be distributed weekly

Why OrthoACCESS?

Preclinical medical education on musculoskeletal conditions is lacking, and as a result, medical students pursuing orthopedic surgery rely heavily on clinical rotations and sub-internships to prepare for their internships. However, there is no standardized curriculum during these clinical experiences ensuring students are well-equipped for residency. OrthoACCESS fills this gap.

History

In the spring of 2019, a group of orthopaedic educators created OrthoACCESS, a structured, peer-reviewed curriculum specifically for MS4 students to take part in as they traveled between institutions on their sub-internships. It was so well received, that it was adapted to be fully virtual during the pandemic, providing valuable training in a time when students were unable to complete in-person rotations. In 2020, 1062 students from 66 countries registered for the program.

Does it work?

OrthoACCESS has proven effective in delivering foundational musculoskeletal training for students pursuing orthopaedic surgery, with respondents citing more knowledge and ability to apply their knowledge after every single lecture of the series. Faculty have also found the program to be “quite useful” in preparing their future interns and providing opportunities to network with applicants. Check out our publication for more.
