On June 5, 2022, our partner Slavicult group at Yale organized a roundtable in Fontainebleau in collaboration with the Fondation pour la Mémoire de l’Esclavage to discuss the historical relation between image and slavery. The debate centered on the role of visual culture in the establishment and organization of the slave trade and regimes of enslavement from the 15th to the 19th centuries, as well as in the structuring of resistance to slavery and its memory. Participants included Mathieu Abonnenc (Université Paris 8 Vincennes-Saint Denis), Ana Lucia Araujo (Howard University), Gaëlle Beaujean (Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac), Cécile Fromont (Yale University), and Krystel Gualdé (Musée d’histoire de Nantes).
