“Marché aux Nègres,” Johann Moritz Rugendas (1835)

Although we had to cancel our Spring in-person events due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Slavery and Visual Culture Working Group is still active as an intellectual community.

To ensure that our members keep connected in these challenging times, we are pleased to announce that we are hosting a reading group this coming Monday, May 25, 2:00-3:00pm. The text to be discussed is Alejandro de la Fuente’s essay “Afro-Latin American Art,” from the collection Afro-Latin American Studies: An Introduction (Cambridge University Press, 2018), edited by Alejandro de la Fuente and George Reid Andrews.

Afro-Latin American Studies: An Introduction offers a systematic survey of humanities and social science scholarship on the exciting field of Afro-Latin American studies. Each essay synthesize and present the current state of knowledge on a broad variety of topics, including Afro-Latin American music, religions, literature, art history, political thought, social movements, legal history, environmental history, and ideologies of racial inclusion. Chapter 10, which is the one we are reading for our meeting, offers a precise definition of “Afro-Latin American art,” analyzing specific cases in which this concept has been articulated in Brazil, Cuba, Ecuador, and in other Latin American countries.
We hope to see you there!
