Slavery and Visual Culture Colloquium – Journées d’études sur l’esclavage et les cultures visuelles

After a successful first year of events on the University of Chicago campus in the academic year of 2016-2017, the Slavery and Visual Culture Working Group hosted a 3-day colloquium in France in March of 2018. This three-day colloquium brought together University of Chicago faculty members, distinguished faculty from other international universities for three days of presenting research, visiting local collections, and developing focused discussions and future research projects related to the objects, institutions, and spaces visited in Paris and Nantes, once one of France’s most important slave trading ports, and now a node in the country’s efforts toward the promotion of the memory of the trade. The format of this event was designed to provide time and space for vigorous intellectual exchange.
