Modern Cooperative Owners Relocating to Dallas – Start Liquidation Sale

Hyde Parkers are saying goodbye to one of the neighborhood’s favorite stores, Modern Cooperative, located at 1500 E. 53rd Street. Owners Tiffany Paige and Mike Biersma are relocating to Dallas, and the prospect of warmer weather was an added benefit for the couple.

The store – “Where Vintage Modern Meets Handmade” – has been open in Hyde Park since November 2015. A recent “Faces of 53rd Street” article in the Chicago Reader noted, “Right from the start, the store became a shopping destination on 53rd Street with its curated combination of mid-century modern and vintage Danish furniture, modern Scandinavian-inspired home décor accessories, and unique pieces from over 90 local artists, predominantly from the Chicago area.” Paige and Biersma “…were struck by the friendliness and sense of community in Hyde Park,” and moved just a few blocks away from the store in 2016.

In a Modern Cooperative Instagram post, Paige wrote, “After more than nine years and two stores, we’re sad to announce that we’re closing Modern Cooperative’s retail operation in Hyde Park. A sincere thank you goes out to our dedicated customers and talented artists for supporting us over all these years. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed our time both in Pilsen and Hyde Park building lasting friendships with you, our neighbors. We’ve had a great run, and from the bottom of our hearts we truly appreciate all the love you’ve shown for Modern Cooperative.”

The store started a liquidation sale today (Thursday, March 5), with 40% savings off regular retail prices. Everything is first come/first served, there are no holds, items must be picked up within five days of purchase, there is no discount on delivery, and all sales are final. Store hours during the liquidation sale are Thursday/Friday from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m., Saturday/Sunday from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., and closed Monday through Wednesday. Store fixtures will go on sale in April.
