This Friday and Saturday: Graduate Research Conference

This Friday and Saturday, the German Philosophy Workshop will jointly present several talks with the Philosophy department as part of the annual Graduate Research Conference, which features the research of University of Chicago Philosophy PhD students currently on the academic job market. Three of these talks will be on German Idealism. See below:

Friday, December 2nd, 9:00-10:30: Anastasia Artemyev Berg, “Evil or only Immature? Acquiring Moral Character in Kant”

Friday, December 2nd, 3:00-4:30: Jessica Tizzard, “Making Room for Evil: Kant’s Cognitivism and the Human Predisposition Towards Goodness”

Saturday, December 3rd, 10:45-12:15: Andrew Werner, “Objective Thought”

November 11th, Laura Papish on Kant on Self-Deception

Please join us this Friday, November 11th when Laura Papish (George Washington University) will present her paper entitled “Kant on Self-Deception, Rationalization, and the Hell of Self-Cognition.” This paper was presented at the Eastern APA as part of a panel on Kant in January, and its content will be included in her forthcoming book manuscript. The paper has been posted to the website in the ‘Papers’ section.

We meet in the usual place at the usual time: Cobb 219, 1:30pm.

This Thursday, November 3rd, Carl Posy

Join us this Thursday, November 3rd, when Carl Posy (Hebrew University of Jerusalem) will present his paper “Realism, Idealism and All That: Kant’s Fourth Paralogism and the Critical Standpoint”. The paper will not be distributed in advance.

Note the unusual day, time, and location: we meet from 4:30-6:30 on Thursday evening in Wiebolt 408.

October 14th- Tom Schulte on Hegel’s Epistemic Subject

Join us this Friday, October 14th, when Tom Schulte (Chicago) will present his paper “Hegel on the Social Constitution of the Epistemic Subject: The Emergence of Recognition in the Phenomenology of Spirit.” The paper has been posted to the website, and will be presented at the workshop.

June 3rd- Tizzard on Practical and Theoretical Sensibility in Kant

Join us this Friday, June 3rd, for the last session of the German Philosophy Workshop this academic year. Jessica Tizzard (Chicago) will present her paper “Forms of Rational Determination: A study of practical and theoretical sensibility in Kant,” which is available on our papers page. The paper will be read in part during the session.

May 20- Kirwin on Nietzsche & Freedom of the Will

April 20th- Gabriel on Existence and Sense

On Wednesday, April 20th from 4:30-6:30 PM, the GPW is assisting the CEPW to host Markus Gabriel from Universität Bonn, who will discuss his papers “The Meaning of ‘Existence’ and the Contingency of Sense” and “Neutral Realism” which can be found on our papers page. Please read the papers in advance and come ready to discuss.

April 15th- Simonelli on Knowledge, Perception, and Experience

German Philosophers!

This coming Friday, April 15th, 2:00-4:30 (note the later start time) in Wieboldt 408, Ryan Simonelli will be presenting his paper “Having Knowledge in Experience,” in which he discusses issues in John McDowell’s philosophy of perceptual experience, drawing on various German philosophers, both living and dead, including recent GPW guests Andrea Kern and Sebastian Rödl. The paper will be read in part during the session and is available in full here. Please join us for what is sure to be a lively discussion.
