Past Events
Opening Reception with Pachanga!
Thursday, October 3rd, 2019 International House
From 6pm to 8pm this evening the University of Chicago will host Pachanga! on campus. Pachanga! is a Salsa/Afro-Cuban Latin dance party and live music showcase that rotates venues around Chicago each month. A “mercado” will also feature local artisans.
Open Mic
Friday, October 4th, 2019 Bartlett Lounge
The University of Chicago chapter of MEChA will host an open mic from 5pm to 8pm. MEChA’s open mic is a space to share poetry, art, and perform. Artists of all kinds are welcome to come out and share their talents!
This event is open to all UChicago students and staff.
The Latinx Vote in 2020
Monday, October 7th, 2019 Institute of Politics
2020 will be the first election in which Hispanics make up the largest racial or ethnic minority in the electorate. Key races in states like Florida, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado and North Carolina will be decided by what we know as the Latino vote. This seminar is part of IOP Pritzker Fellow Enrique Acevedo’s series, “The Latinx Community & the 2020 Election.”

Free Screening at Doc Films

Join us at 9:30pm for a free screening of Roma! The autobiographical film set in Mexico City in the 1970’s won three Academy Awards and has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 96%

OMSA Latinx Affinity Group Meeting

Join us from 5pm to 6:30pm for a night of conversation! Engage in peer led dialogue, meet other students, learn about Latinx student organizations on campus, and hear from OMSA representatives about resources and opportunities.

Outing to Pilsen

MEChA’s outing to Pilsen is a great opportunity for people who are either new to or from the Chicago community to see one of the most iconic Latinx neighborhoods in the country. This is part of a series MEChA will put on to help Latinx students learn about and engage with various Latinx communities in Chicago!

Noche Con Ariana Brown
Wednesday, October 16th, 2019 Green Line Performing Arts Center
Ariana Brown is a queer Black Mexican American poet from San Antonio. She is the recipient of two Academy of American Poets Prizes and a 2014 collegiate national poetry slam champion. A writing workshop with Ariana at 5pm will be followed by a performance and Q&A at 7pm.

Diana del Ángel Reading & Discussion

At 1:30pm, Mexico City-based author Diana del Ángel reads from her work and discusses with authors and UChicago professors Lina Maria Ferreira Cabeza-Vanegas and Rachel Galvin.
Diana del Ángel was a fellow of the Foundation for Mexican Letters and FONCA. She is the author of Barranca (2018) and Procesos de la noche (2018).

Could Texas go Blue as Soon as 2020?

Texas is one of five states in the country with a minority majority demographic, but it’s the only state among those that’s still voting consistently republican. That could change in 2020. Come out to discuss Kali Fajardo-Anstine’s book Sabrina & Corina. The book (Goodreads score 4.4/5) is a collection of stories about Latinas of Indigenous descent living in the American West. The event will take place 6pm-7pm. Copies and time will be provided to read a section of the book before discussing.
