Next meeting April 12, 3-5p, WB 206

Dear friends,

Join us again next Monday to discuss chapter one of Freddie Rokem’s recent book, Philosophers and Thespians: Thinking Performance (2010), with the author.

On Monday, April 12, 3-5 pm, in Wieboldt 206

Freddie Rokem is Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Tel Aviv University, Chairman of the Editorial Advisory Board of All About Jewish Theatre, and Visiting Scholar in Theater & Performance Studies at the U of C. In Philosophers and Thespians: Thinking Performance, he explores the interaction between philosophy and theater or performance using four direct encounters between philosophers and thespians. Hovering between the fictional and the historical, Rokem’s work addresses notions of performance and performativity as derived from the discursive practices of philosophy and performance. The chapter we will discuss features Socrates, Agathon, and Aristophanes from Plato’s Symposium.
