For the first time, UChicago hosted the Southside Science Festival (affectionately nicknamed S3F) as an opportunity for students and families to get a taste of all the different science that happens in Hyde Park. On September 17 2022, the UChicago Science Quads was covered with tents hosting different booths and activities. Hands-on science demos led by graduate students in STEM fields featured everything from a butterfly tent to DNA extraction from strawberries to CPR dummies. WiC+ hosted two of our own demo tables, showing nylon synthesis to explain polymers and chlorophyll extraction from spinach leaves (with UV light) to think about light and energy. Despite the drizzling weather, the day was a huge success with a great turnout of families.
