“Happiness as a Highest Good”

Respondent: Michal Zechariah, English
Description: In this essay I sketch a call for reviving thought about a highest good in mainstream Anglophone practical philosophy, drawing on work by John Stuart Mill and Immanuel Kant in making my case. I work to address a variety of objections to any such revival, to review some standard responses, and to introduce additional support for the thought that we need thought about the highest good to do our work in practical philosophy and, moreover, that happiness in accordance with virtue is the most likely candidate for the highest good.
The paper, to be read in advance, will be distributed to the Affect and the Emotions Workshop mailing list and is available in the post below with a password. Light refreshments will be served.
