Call for Submissions: Affect and the Emotions 2020-2021 Program

The Affect and Emotions Workshop is now accepting submissions for the academic year 2020-2021. The workshop features work in progress by doctoral students, faculty, and postdoctoral fellows at the University of Chicago, as well as a few guest speakers per year. We welcome proposals for article drafts, dissertation chapters, conference papers, and para-academic projects from across the University community. In the past year, our program included presentations by scholars in the humanities, social sciences, religious studies, and psychology, on topics ranging from emotional language in Old Assyrian letters to affect recognition in AI. To learn more about our activity, please see our past events.

If you have work in progress that you would like to present for discussion and feedback, please submit a brief proposal including a provisional paper title and a 200-word abstract to both Jane Gordon (jgordon616@uchicago.edu) and Alex Jania (aejania@uchicago.edu). Please also indicate your current position, project type, and the quarters in which you are available to present (you can find the academic calendar here). Submissions are due by the end of day on August 15th.

In selecting papers, we aim to create a multidisciplinary program that includes research on the workshop topics by scholars at different stages of their careers, while giving priority to advanced graduate students at the dissertation-writing stage of their program. We also take into account scheduling considerations. Our plan is to meet on alternate Monday afternoons, and we’re committed to finding productive ways to hold the workshop, either online or in person, during this upcoming academic year. We anticipate that the meetings for the Fall Quarter at least will happen online. If you submit a proposal, you can expect to hear back from us by September 1st.
