History and Context Mini-Institute

2024 Theme: DEI & Systemic Racialized Violence on the South Side

The University of Chicago is uniquely positioned on the South Side of Chicago to work with historically underserved, under-resourced, and over-surveilled populations. As we progress through the 21st century, we are bombarded with news information as it relates to crime and violence in our communities and beyond. Join the Office of Diversity and Inclusion as we attempt to untangle historical and cultural contexts of racism, crime, and racialized state violence. The History & Context Mini Institute will consist of four sessions including a film screening of 13th directed by Ava DuVernay with a conversation, a BSD and community panel, a working session, and a bus tour of the South Side.

Previous Events

Session 1 – 13th Film Discussion

Tuesday, January 16th, 5:00pm-6:30pm
Zoom

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion invites you to join Leaders from Chicago CRED and the Violence Recovery Program to watch clips of Ava DuVernay’s film 13th and discuss historical contexts of race, crime, and racialized violence.

As part of the larger South Side community, UChicago is uniquely positioned to work with historically underserved, under-resourced, and over-surveilled populations. Thus, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion aims to begin and continue conversations on how to enrich these relationships.

As a participant, we want to make this event as accessible as possible. So, we recommend you watch 13th before joining the discussion on Netflix or Youtube as we will not have time to screen the entire documentary.
