Sound, Place, and Space in Iași, România: Fieldwork Preview
How has the political situation in Eastern Romania affected the language practices of its residents? In my workshop I will discuss my proposed sociolinguistic dissertation project that explores the construction of place identity in Eastern Romania, with a focus on Iași, near the border with Moldova. It investigates how current political tensions– such as the legacy of communism, the prospect of reunification with Moldova, and most recently, the influx of Ukrainian refugees into the city– influence identity construction and language practices in the region. I will preview my intended field and sociophonetic methodologies and materials in hopes to receive feedback before I depart for 9 months of ethnographic fieldwork.
