The Complex General Surgical Oncology fellowship at the University of Chicago, in existence for over 30 years, perfectly reflects the essence of one of the elite institutions of higher learning in the world. Our commitment to training the next generation of leaders in academic surgical oncology is unwavering and grounded in providing an unequaled experience in cutting-edge complex cancer surgery, a fertile exposure to groundbreaking research and an incomparable educational environment that simultaneously promotes intellectual curiosity and your well-being. If you are interested in making a difference and not just practicing but defining future surgical oncology care then the University of Chicago CGSO training program is your academic home and the ideal fit for you.

The CGSO Fellowship at the University of Chicago-NorthShore Healthsystem is one of the premier fellowship programs in the country. Our mission is to train the future leaders of surgical oncology; surgeons who understand cancer, and are single minded in the mission to reduce the suffering it causes. Our program offers unparalleled clinical training programs with a robust experience in breast, gastroinestinal, hepatopancreaticobiliary,  soft tissue, melanoma, endocrine, and peritoneal surface malignancies. Our innovative robotic surgery curriculum is specifically tailored to develop expertise in our trainees to become proficient in minimally invasive approaches to cancer.

In addition to providing a rich clinical training environment, drawing from the strengths of two extremely busy clinical cancer centers, the program affords opportunities for exciting, innovative research and professional development for all fellows. The vast resources of the University of Chicago allow fellows to explore research in basic sciences, complex data systems, outcomes research, health economics research, quality and implementation science, and ethics to name a few. The graduate schools provide graduate level courses and programs that are made available to fellows at reduced tuition rates during their fellowship.

Our program thrives on a strong clinical learning environment that values diversity, inclusion, innovation and commitment to our patients. The faculty in our program are or have been national leaders in their disease sites and are true thought leaders in the field. The resources and facilities are modern and well equipped with state of the art technology including stereotactic navigation, advanced robotics and minimally invasive surgery and cGMP facilities. Our Comprehensive Cancer Center is NCI designated and one of the premier cancer centers with numerous leaders of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, Society of Surgical Oncology, American Society of Radiation Oncology and the American Cancer Society. Importantly we are currently designing the reimagined cancer center of the future. The Center for Cancer Care, the first free standing Cancer Center in the region, will serve as the flagship for innovative comprehensive cancer care in our ever expanding network

We are able to provide tailored rotations for each individual within the context of the ACGME requirements. We invite you to explore the website and learn more about our stellar fellowship.
