Chicago Thanksgiving

Whether you’re in the mood for theatre, the outdoors, or a Friendsgiving meal, the Gargoyle has you covered. Here are some fun things to do around town during the Thanksgiving Break.

Swing by the Thanksgiving parade in the Loop, join the 2022 Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration at Rockefeller, jog or walk the Turkey Trot, or stroll the Point. You could catch a performance of “The Island” at Court Theatre with your student discount, join a virtual conversation on the history of the American musical, or venture northside to see American Blues Theatre’s “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

If the movies beckon, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” is playing all week at Hyde Park’s Harper Theater. And don’t forget, your UCID is your UChicago Arts Pass to free and discounted admission for 70+ arts & culture organizations throughout Chicago (browse partner organizations for events).

Last but not least, the food—organize a Friendsgiving dinner or check out 53rd Street’s handy guide to ordering Thanksgiving takeout from Hyde Park eateries.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Why You Should Consider Applying for a Fellowship

Graduate students often ask: why should I apply for a fellowship? The fellowships team at UChicagoGRAD is happy to meet with students wondering how a fellowship fits into their academic career. Fellowships can provide funding to pursue academic research or travel abroad for enriching learning experiences. Students also remark that competitive fellowships strengthen CV’s and resumes. But there is more to gain from fellowships than funding and prestige.

Students benefit from the process of applying to fellowships, which require applicants to offer compelling reasons justifying their research to specialists and interdisciplinary audiences alike. Applying to a fellowship encourages students to think through important logistics of their research, such how to select research participants, how many documents can feasibly be reviewed in archival settings, and how to set achievable goals. Some fellowship competitions, such as the Fulbright Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad, provide feedback to applicants, which is an excellent, low-stakes opportunity to discover how others are interpreting your research proposal.

Those who apply to fellowships are equipped to speak to a variety of audiences about their goals and contributions, a skill that will serve students’ academic and professional trajectories in graduate school and beyond. We encourage you to apply!

To learn more about fellowships, schedule an advising appointment to explore opportunities, sign up for an upcoming event, or join our fellowships Canvas site. We offer written feedback on draft application materials for all fellowship opportunities.

Fellowships for Language Learning and Research Abroad

Graduate students working toward advanced proficiency in second languages are sure to be interested two fellowship opportunities with upcoming deadlines: Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) and the Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Award (DDRA).

FLAS Fellowships are awards for graduate students concentrating on modern foreign language and international or area studies. In the 2022-2023 competition cycle, UChicago will accept applications for languages in three world areas: East Asia, East Europe, and Middle East. All applicants must be U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents, and cannot be beyond the fifth year of graduate study while holding the award. FLAS Fellowships provide two kinds of awards:

  • Academic Year Fellowships for language and area studies coursework on campus during the 2022-23 academic year, and
  • Summer FLAS Fellowships for language study on campus, domestically, or abroad during summer 2022.

Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Award (DDRA) fellowships, supported by the United States Department of Education, provide opportunities to doctoral candidates to engage in dissertation research abroad in modern foreign languages and area studies. Projects deepen research knowledge on and help the nation develop capability in areas of the world not generally included in U.S. curricula. Doctoral candidates can propose 6-12 months of research in non-Western countries on this fellowship. Applicants must have the necessary language skills to carry out research. Multi-country proposals are accepted. Interested University of Chicago applicants MUST apply through UChicagoGRAD. Students should reach out to Kevin Doherty (kevdoh@uchicago.edu) to initiate their candidacy and schedule an advising meeting to discuss their application. An information session will be held on February 9, 2022 at 12pm, and workshops will be announced soon.
