“Disintegrating/Reimagining the Agora: Staging Civic Visions in Greenpoint’s McCarren Park Pool.”
Becca Journey
(Anthropology)
This MA paper draft excerpt draws on archival and ethnographic research to trace the
protean social history of a once-derelict Brooklyn municipal swimming pool. Attending
in particular to the pool’s recent reconfiguration as a performance space and public venue,
this paper asks how an anthropology of the pleasures of looking at broken things may
inform a concept of late liberal civic care.
