Fall 2013 Schedule

The Transnational Approaches to Modern Europe workshop is pleased to announce its fall schedule:

October 2 – Celeste Moore

October 16 – Kristy Ironside

October 30 – Emily Swafford

November 13 – Alexandra Oeser

November 20 – Jake Smith

***

We look forward to another year of diverse workshop sessions and stimulating conversation and hope that you will join us. Modern Europe will meet on alternate Wednesdays throughout the quarter, beginning October 2, with refreshments at 4:45 and discussion from 5:00-6:30.

The workshop will be focusing on the concepts and methods of transnational/comparative history next year. While it is not a requirement that work presented be comparative or transnational, we ask that presenters and discussants, in their oral interventions at the beginning of the session, frame their comments in terms broader than those of national historiographies.

It is expected that all students presenting in the workshop attend ALL workshops during the year (including those after their presentation). This is a matter of courtesy and respect and also necessary for the workshop to develop an intellectual community and sense of trust. (Absences due to illness or travel are, of course, acceptable.)

In addition, please keep the following in mind:
1. Papers for the Modern Europe Workshop should be a reasonable length — no more than 50 pages.
2. We had more interest in presenting than available slots this year so it is essential that those scheduled to present maintain their commitment. Work presented should be a draft, but a complete and relatively polished draft.

If you have questions or concerns about the workshop, please feel free to contact Emily Marker (emarker@uchicago.edu) or Katya Motyl (kmotyl@uchicago.edu), co-coordinators for 2013-2014.
