Juliano Saccomani

Juliano Saccomani

Juliano Saccomani was born and raised in the interior of the state of São Paulo, in Brazil. In 2012 he received a Fulbright scholarship to teach at the University of Georgia, from where he received his PhD in Portuguese and Spanish in 2020.

 

With a strong interest for the literature that can be found in newspapers and magazines, Juliano created Fala Aí at the University of Georgia, and is now the creator and editor-in-chief of Væranda at the University of Chicago.

Ana Maria Lima was born in Rio and raised in Fortaleza, Brasil.

She has been teaching Portuguese at the University of Chicago for 30 years.
Ana is interested in language pedagogy and literature, but her true love is coffee.

Director of the Catalan Language Program

Alba is passionate about teaching—and learning!—languages. She grew up in Catalonia, close to Barcelona, where she completed her PhD in Translation Studies. She lived in different parts of Europe before moving to the US in 2010.

Alba loves cooking (look up for her Catalan cooking workshops!), knitting, riding her bike around Chicago and throwing pots on the wheel.

Alice always wanted to learn French. But before she could do that, when she was seven, her family moved to Brazil. She fell in love with that country and the Portuguese language, and also got to start learning French there! These two languages have been a lifelong pursuit and passion.

Gerdine Ulysse

Gerdine Ulysse

Haitian Kreyol Language Program

Gerdine was born and raised in La Gonâve, an island of Haiti. She earned a doctoral degree in Second language Acquisition and a masters’ degree in French with a specialization in Teaching French as a Foreign Language.

She loves speaking and teaching different languages. She also enjoys exploring different issues that may affect language acquisition.

Gerdine loves singing, cooking, and taking road trips.

Janet Sedlar

Co-Director of the Spanish Language Program

Janet Sedlar’s childhood was spent in a small town in western Pennsylvania, but since age 18 has lived in Montreal, New York City, and Oakland (California) with shorter stints in Madrid and Paris (about a year each). Shortly after completing her Ph.D. in Romance Linguistics at UC Berkeley in 2008, she came to Chicago to join our RLL department and has been here ever since. She is an incorrigible grammar nerd and soul/jazz singer (currently on hiatus)

Veronica Vegna

Veronica Vegna

Director of the Italian Language Program

Veronica Vegna was born in Sicily and studied in Italy, Spain, England, and the US, where she came with a Fulbright scholarship. Her doctoral dissertation examined gender roles and the representation of the mafia in contemporary Italian cinema, which is also the theme of her book Donne, mafia e cinema: una prospettiva interdisciplinare (Ravenna: Longo Editore, 2017).

She loves swimming in the sea, free diving, painting, and traveling.

Já na infância entregava a que veio: sejam livros ou novelas, toda forma de leitura é válida. Cat lady e apaixonada por cordel, pela cultura nordestina e também por roller derby, ela se divide entre telinhas, telonas e páginas.

Dean is a second-year undergraduate from Minneapolis studying Business Economics and Romance Languages. While at UChicago, he has taken classes in Spanish, Portuguese, and Catalan, and received a grant to study Danish this summer. Outside of school, he plays bassoon in the University Symphony Orchestra and in his spare time enjoys playing tennis

Stella Shiffrin grew up in Chicago, and is currently a third year in the College studying psychology. She is interested in language, art, and education, and is involved with choir, theater, and the Neighborhood Schools Program at the University.
