The iBIO (Illinois Biotechnology Innovation Organization) selected Dr. Maryellen Giger, A.N. Pritzker Professor of Radiology, as this year’s recipient of the iCON Innovator Award. The iCON Innovator Award recognizes an active researcher/scientist within the ranks of life sciences education who is acknowledged by his or her peers as a leader in the contemporary teaching of, and scholarship in, biotechnology and its related sciences. The award also recognizes those scientists who demonstrate leadership potential at the frontier of knowledge in the life sciences and conduct research that is anticipated to enhance economic development in the State of Illinois.
Dr. Giger is considered to be one of the pioneers in the development of computer-aided diagnosis (CAD). She has authored or co-authored more than 220 peer-reviewed journal articles, is an inventor on over 35 U.S. patents, and serves as a reviewer for various national and international granting agencies including the National Institute of Health and the U.S. Army. She was honored for her dedication to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) education at the high school, undergraduate and graduate education levels.
Dr. Giger was presented this award during the iBIO Institute’s 12th Annual iCON Awards Dinner on Tuesday, October 2nd at the Chicago Botanic Garden.
