Nephrectomy (transplant or non-neoplastic)

These specimens are signed out by the Medical Renal service. Consult Medical Renal attendings with questions.

Triage & Gross

  1. Measure specimen in 3 dimensions.
  2. Measure length of attached ureter and vessels. Note diameter of ureter if dilated.
  3. Bisect kidney through renal hilus.
  4. Measure adrenal, if present.
  5. Serially section each half of the kidney.
  6. Examine kidney for any cysts or masses. Measure range of cyst sizes and masses in greatest dimension. If solid masses are identified, see Neoplastic Nephrectomy for more details.
  7. No need to fix overnight. Specimen should be grossed same day.
  8. Submit representative cortex, medulla and pelvis in two blocks.
