Rush / Priority Cases

The “Rush” or “Same-day” biopsy runs are the 7:30 am, 9:30 am, 12 pm, and 1:30 pm biopsy runs. These specimens are usually grossed by PAs or techs. These have no specific clinical urgency; however, they are small enough to be processed same-day.

Conversely, a case that is requested as “Rush” or “Priority” by the clinician, surgeon, or attending pathologist is a case OF ANY SIZE that has clinical urgency and needs expedited processing. These can be biopsies, routines, bigs, or fat cases.

If a case is requested as “Rush” or “Priority” by the clinician, surgeon, or attending pathologist, please do the following:

  1. Call histology and give them the case number.
  2. Place a rush flag on the case in Beaker.
  3. For cases outside of the same day/rush runs, discuss with histology management the feasibility of a separate processing run and slide cutting.
  4. Histology will notify the resident/fellow/attending once the case is delivered to their box for review.

General workflow priority per Cory Nash Sept 2025:

  1. Rush specimens
  2. Derm specimens
  3. Breast core biopsies in formalin before 2:30 pm
  4. Brain biopsies
  5. Heart, liver, lung, kidney, Hirschsprung biopsies, EMRs
  6. Outside specimens, most importantly Lingen biopsies
  7. All other biopsies
    1. Bone marrows still need to be in decal by 5:15-5:30, and muscle and nerves still need to be prioritized
